This button must be clicked to be activated. Once activated you can use it on the map in the following ways.
This button allows you drag a box around the extent you want to zoom into. To drag a box, click the map with the left mouse button and hold the mouse button down as you drag your mouse cursor. You should see a blue box appear as you move the mouse away from the point of your initial click.
If you click on the map, it will zoom in, centered on the point of the click and the width and height of the current extent will be decreased by 1/2. This means that the new area that is displayed will be 1/4 the area in the previous extent.
Click once on the button to zoom in on the middle of the map. The width and height of the current extent will be decreased by 1/2. This means that the new area that is displayed will be 1/4 the area in the previous extent.

This button allows you drag a box around the extent you want your current extent to fit into. The part of the map that is currently visible should be shrunk down and moved so it fits into the box you drew.
If you click on the map, it will zoom out, centered on the point of the click and the width and height of the current extent will be doubled. This means that the new area that is displayed will be 4 times the area in the previous extent.
Click once on the button to zoom out, centered on middle of the map. The width and height of the current extent will be doubled. This means that the new area that is displayed will be 4 times the area in the previous extent.
